Geneva. India strongly condemned Pakistan’s attacks in Afghanistan in the UN Security Council. Women, children and even local cricket players have died in Pakistan’s attacks. India has called them a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. Earlier this week, fresh clashes broke out between the Taliban and Pakistani troops. Both the countries had agreed to a ceasefire two months ago to stop the weeks-long fighting on the border, but now both the sides are once again attacking each other. Both the countries have accused each other of breaking the ceasefire.
According to media reports, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Parvataneni Harish said that India expresses deep concern over Pakistan’s policy of trade and transport terrorism. Afghanistan is landlocked from all sides and hence Pakistan repeatedly closes the border with it, which is causing huge losses to its trade. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said that we support the appeal for full respect of the UN Charter and international law, especially with emphasis on the protection of innocent civilians.
He further said that we condemn such acts and also strongly support the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Afghanistan. Let us tell you that the border conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan started when Pakistan carried out an air attack on Kabul in the beginning of October this year. Afghanistan also retaliated but the fighting intensified when Afghan Foreign Minister Aamir Khan Muttaki visited India. The clashes were the most serious since the Taliban came to power in 2021.
After several weeks of fighting, both sides agreed to a ceasefire on 19 October, brokered by Qatar and Türkiye. A Taliban government spokesperson claimed that Pakistan initiated the new clashes and Kabul was forced to respond. Harish said India is closely monitoring the security situation and urges the international community to take joint action to prevent UN-designated terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and their proxy groups such as The Resistance Front from operating across the border.
He said that there is a need for practical dialogue with the Taliban. He said that only the punitive policy against Afghanistan has proved unsuccessful. He said that we appeal to the United Nations and the international community to adopt policies that can bring lasting benefits to the people of Afghanistan.
