South Africa and Israel face to face, both adopted strict stance

Ankara. The long-running diplomatic tension between South Africa and Israel has now reached the point of open confrontation. South Africa has ordered Israel’s deputy ambassador and acting ambassador, Ariel Seidman, to leave the country. In response, Israel has also expelled a senior South African diplomat and asked him to leave the country within 72 hours.

The South African Foreign Ministry on Friday declared Ariel Seidman persona non grata. The government alleged that Seidman’s behavior and public statements undermined the dignity and sovereignty of the country.

These were the reasons behind the expulsion

Comment on the President: The Foreign Ministry says that President Cyril Ramaphosa was insulted through a post made on social media.

Diplomatic rules ignored: Information about Israeli officials’ visit to South Africa was not formally shared. Recently Israeli Foreign Ministry official David Saranga was present in the country.

Questions on sovereignty: South Africa alleges that Israel’s official social media platforms were used for defamatory attacks against the government.

Israel’s quick counterattack

Just hours after South Africa’s decision, Israel also gave a strong response. The Israeli Foreign Ministry expelled senior South African diplomat Shawn Edward Bieneveld and instructed him to leave the country within 72 hours.

Why did relationships deteriorate?

Tension between the two countries is not new.

Gaza war and ICJ case: South Africa has filed a petition in the International Court against Israel accusing Palestinians of genocide.

Controversy regarding Hamas: Israel has alleged that South Africa is supporting Hamas and fighting its legal battle.

Reduction in diplomatic level: Israel recalled its chief ambassador in 2023 itself, after which Ariel Seidman was posted as the most senior official.

Will America intervene?

America is keeping an eye on this entire dispute. The US has been a vocal critic of South Africa’s foreign policy under the leadership of President Donald Trump. Washington has accused him of adopting a soft stance towards Iran and Hamas. Last year, the US also expelled South African Ambassador Ibrahim Rasool due to his statements on the ‘MAGA’ movement.

Questions raised within the country also

Voices of protest are also being heard regarding this decision in South Africa. Karen Milner, president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, called it a more drastic measure than necessary. He says that expelling a senior diplomat on the basis of some social media posts is not appropriate from the point of view of international diplomacy.
