BNP President Rahman can take oath as Prime Minister on 16 or 17 February

Dhaka. After the 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, the process of formation of the new government has intensified. The swearing in of the MPs elected to the new Parliament is expected to take place tomorrow on Sunday. After this, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Tariq Rahman can take oath as Prime Minister. If sources are to be believed, the swearing-in ceremony can be organized on the evening of 16 or 17 February. According to the political tradition of Bangladesh, the swearing in of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers usually takes place in the evening.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has registered a big victory in this election. Voting was held for 299 seats in the 300-member Parliament, of which the BNP and its allies won about 212 seats. Voting on one seat was postponed due to the death of a candidate. The Election Commission has currently withheld the results of three seats as cases against the concerned candidates are pending in the court.
The alliance of Islamist parties, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, has indicated its emergence as the main opposition by winning about 70 seats. Other small parties and independent candidates have won about 17 seats.
This election was held after the July 2024 movement, which ended the long rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Due to the sudden violence, Sheikh Hasina had to take refuge in India. At present, the general elections were held under the supervision of the interim government, whose chief advisor was headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. This is being considered the first truly competitive election in recent years. The voting percentage was recorded at around 59 percent.
July National Charter was issued along with the parliamentary elections.
Along with the parliamentary elections, a national referendum on the ‘July National Charter’ was also held. According to initial trends, about 65 percent of voters have supported it, although final results are yet to be declared. Nearly one million security personnel were deployed across the country during the voting and the process remained peaceful except for isolated incidents.
PM Modi and PM Shahbaz congratulated
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif have congratulated Tariq Rehman and BNP on their victory and expressed hope of strengthening bilateral relations. Now everyone’s eyes are on the swearing-in and policy direction of the new government.
