Defeat in midterm elections and increased risk of impeachment

Defeat in midterm elections and increased risk of impeachment

Washington. After the military action taken by US President Donald Trump in Venezuela and the arrest of the President there, political activities have intensified within America. President Trump has issued a serious warning to the lawmakers of his party, the Republican Party, in which he has admitted that the upcoming midterm elections could prove to be a red line for their future. Addressing an important meeting of Republican lawmakers of the House of Representatives in Washington, Trump made it clear that if the party loses in these elections, his presidency could be in danger. They fear that if the opposition Democratic Party gets majority in Congress, they will immediately start the impeachment process against him.
This fear of Trump has come to the fore amid criticism arising from his recent foreign policy and military decisions. He has bluntly told his MPs that they will have to register victory at any cost, because the opposition parties will definitely find some ground to remove him from the post. Removing a President from office is a complex process in the American political system, but losing the midterm elections means the President loses control over Congress. If Democrats have a majority in the House of Representatives, they would have the constitutional power to impeach him, which would be the biggest legislative challenge to a president.
Midterm elections in the US are held exactly in the middle of a president’s four-year term. These elections are not just symbolic, but are the real test of the balance of power. In these, voting takes place for all 435 seats of the House of Representatives and about one-third of the seats of the Senate. Along with this, elections for governors and local bodies are also held in many states. If the ruling party performs poorly in these elections, it becomes almost impossible for the President to make new laws, pass the budget and make important appointments. In the current scenario, Trump fears that his tough stance on issues like Venezuela and Greenland will be used as a political weapon by opposition parties. Losing majority in the House of Representatives simply means that every decision of the President will be closely scrutinized and he may have to face the legal process of removing him from office in the middle of his tenure. This is why Trump is putting all his strength into winning these elections, so that he can ensure his political and constitutional security.
