Major accident in Milan, Italy, tram derailed and entered a shop; 2 killed, 40 injured

Italy A major accident occurred when a tram derailed in Milan city on Friday. After derailment, the tram collided with a building. Two people died and 38 others were injured in this accident. City Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who arrived at the scene, said one of the dead was hit by the tram when it derailed, while the other victim was a passenger. Firefighters who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident wrapped the shocked passengers in emergency blankets, while ambulances took the seriously injured to hospital. Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni expressed her condolences for the dead after the accident.

The driver did not activate the track switch

According to media reports, preliminary investigation revealed that the driver had not activated the track switch. It is also reported that the driver had gone beyond the last stop of the line before the accident. An eyewitness reported that a man was trapped under the tram, with his arm trapped under the tram, The Guardian reported. Chief investigator Prosecutor Marcelo Viola said the derailment caused significant impact to the building. He said that due to security reasons the building has been evacuated at present. According to Sala, one of the victims was an Italian citizen over the age of 60, while the other was a foreign national who lived in the city.
