Bangkok,. Despite US President Donald Trump’s claim of establishing a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, the war between the two countries does not seem to be stopping. Cambodia has claimed that Thai forces have been attacking the disputed border since Saturday morning, while Thailand has also accused Cambodia of violating international rules. At the moment, the military confrontation between Thailand and Cambodia does not stop. This situation has come to light at a time when US President Donald Trump had claimed that he had played an important role in establishing ceasefire between the two countries.
Cambodia’s information ministry said on Saturday that Thai military forces had not stopped cross-border attacks. According to the ministry, Thai forces are still carrying out bombings and fighter jets have also been used in these attacks. The statement said Thai forces have not yet stopped the bombing and attacks are continuing. At the same time, Thailand’s army rejected Cambodia’s allegations and said that Cambodia is repeatedly violating international rules. According to Thailand, Cambodian forces have targeted civilian areas and laid landmines in border areas.
Let us tell you that after a phone conversation with Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian PM Hun Manet on Friday night, US President Donald Trump had said that both the countries have agreed to stop all types of firing from Friday itself. However, after Trump’s claim, there was no mention of any formal ceasefire agreement in the statements of the leaders of both the countries. Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul clearly said that there has been no ceasefire. When Trump’s claim was questioned, the Thai Foreign Ministry referred the PM’s statement to journalists.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, in a statement released on Facebook on Saturday, referred to his conversation with Trump and earlier discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Manet said Cambodia still wants a peaceful resolution of the disputes. He said Cambodia is committed to resolving the dispute as per the earlier agreement reached in October in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
According to the message released on Trump’s Truth Social, both the leaders have committed to immediately stop all firing and return to the peace framework which was earlier decided with the role of America and the mediation of Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim. Trump said they have agreed to cease all firing this evening and will return to the original peace agreement signed with him and with the help of Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim. The new ceasefire was announced at a time when thousands of civilians have been forced to flee their homes due to deadly clashes in the past few days and the threat of breaking the ceasefire brokered by Malaysia earlier this year. Trump also participated in follow-up meetings held in Malaysia in October. He cites this conflict as one of many that he says he has resolved.
