We must take action to increase the representation and effectiveness of the Security Council

New York. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He said that we must act without delay to increase the representation and effectiveness of the Security Council. His statement came soon after India criticized the United Nations. However, Antonio Guterres’ target is US President Trump’s Board of Peace. Guterres strongly criticized the Board of Peace without naming it and said that no other institution or ad-hoc coalition other than the United Nations can legally compel all countries.
According to media reports, Antonio Guterres wrote in a post on X – The United Nations Security Council is the only organization with the authority to take action on behalf of all member countries on matters of peace and security. Only she takes decisions that apply to everyone. No other institution or ad-hoc coalition can legally compel all countries to abide by decisions on peace and security. Its responsibility is unique. Its responsibility is universal. That is why reform is necessary. That is why we must act without delay to increase the representation and effectiveness of the Security Council.
Let us tell you that amidst geopolitical challenges, India said that the United Nations is no longer seen as an organization that ensures international peace and discussions have moved towards parallel multilateral structures to achieve outcomes related to peace and security. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador said in the open debate of the UN Security Council on ‘Reaffirming the Rule of International Law: Peace, Justice and Ways to Revitalize Multilateralism’ that multilateralism with universal membership, with the UN at its centre, is under increasing pressure. The challenges facing this organization are not just budgetary. Inertia and ineffectiveness in dealing with conflicts remains its major shortcoming.
Let us tell you that US President Trump has started the Board of Peace for Gaza, which is being seen as an alternative or rival to the United Nations. Trump invited many global leaders including PM Modi to join his Board of Peace. The Board will work on a bold new approach to bringing lasting peace to Gaza and resolving global conflicts. At an event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Trump officially approved the Peace Board’s manifesto. Trump will serve as chair of the board, and the countries that have signed its declaration include Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
