On this day in 1971, the Pakistani Army surrendered to the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini in Dhaka. With this Bangladesh became an independent country. Pakistani Army attacked Dhaka University, Police Lines and Hindu settlements. Students, professors, intellectuals and journalists were selectively killed. During this period, lakhs of people died in the first few weeks. Operation Searchlight is counted among the most horrific massacres in history. The Pakistan Army and its allied paramilitary squads like Razakar, Al-Badr, Al-Shams targeted Awami League supporters and intellectuals. Women were raped. According to international commissions, 2-4 lakh women were victims of rape.
