During this period, lakhs of people died in the first few weeks. Operation Searchlight is counted among the most horrific massacres in history. The Pakistan Army and its allied paramilitary squads like Razakar, Al-Badr, Al-Shams targeted Awami League supporters and intellectuals. Women were raped. According to international commissions, 2-4 lakh women were victims of rape.
