US Congress bluntly told Trump to immediately remove 50 percent tariff imposed on India.

Washington. Three members of the US House of Representatives have introduced a resolution aimed at ending the heavy tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on goods imported from India. The purpose of this proposal is to cancel the import duty of up to 50 percent imposed on products coming from India. Lawmakers say that these tariffs are not only illegal, but are also proving harmful for American workers, consumers and India-US bilateral relations.
The resolution has been introduced by Representatives Deborah Ross, Mark Vessey and Raja Krishnamurthy. It is being considered in line with a bipartisan initiative that aims to eliminate similar tariffs imposed on other countries and limit the use of the President’s emergency powers to raise import tariffs. The proposal specifically seeks to repeal the additional 25 percent duty imposed on India under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. These additional duties were imposed on top of the tariffs already in place on August 27, 2025, taking the total import duty to 50 percent. Deborah Ross said North Carolina’s economy is deeply linked to India through trade, investment and the Indian-American community. According to him, Indian companies have invested more than one billion dollars in the state, creating thousands of job opportunities in life sciences, technology and other sectors. Along with this, North Carolina manufacturers export millions of dollars worth of goods to India every year, which brings economic benefits to both the countries.
Mark Veasey described these tariffs as an additional tax on the common people of North Texas. He said that this is having a direct impact on families already struggling with inflation and rising costs. According to Vesey, India is an important cultural, economic and strategic partner of America, and such steps weaken the relations between the two countries.
Raja Krishnamurthy said these tariffs are completely counterproductive. They disrupt supply chains, hurt American workers and make everyday goods more expensive for consumers. He stressed that removing the tariffs will strengthen the economic cooperation and security partnership between the US and India. The proposal is part of a broader effort by Democratic lawmakers to challenge the Trump administration’s unilateral trade policies and rebalance ties with India. Even before this, these MPs, along with other colleagues, had appealed to the President to withdraw the tariff policies and reduce tension between the two countries. The Trump administration had imposed a 25 percent tariff on India in early August and a few days later it was increased by another 25 percent. The reason behind this was said to be the purchase of Russian oil by India.
