Bangladesh’s first woman PM Khaleda Zia passes away, goodbye at the age of 80

BNP President and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia has passed away. He died at 6 am on Tuesday (December 30) during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was facing illnesses for a long time. Khaleda Zia has said goodbye to the world at the age of 80.

This news was confirmed by BNP’s Facebook page. The post said that BNP president and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6 am today, soon after Fajr prayers. We appeal to everyone to pray for the peace of his soul.

What diseases were you suffering from?

According to doctors, Khaleda Zia had liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes and serious heart problems. The former Prime Minister was suffering from various diseases for a long time. Doctors were taking care of him. Besides, recently he was also put on ventilator. According to The Daily Star, Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital on November 23 due to heart and lung infection. He was undergoing treatment for the last 36 days. He was also suffering from pneumonia.

When will the funeral prayers be held?

The party said that when the funeral prayers of Khaleda Zia will be held, it will be announced later. This information has not been given yet. The party has just expressed condolences on his demise. Also everyone has been asked to pray for the peace of his soul.

Khaleda Zia died at a time when just a few days ago her son Tariq Rehman returned to Bangladesh after 17 years from London, where he was living in voluntary exile since 2008. According to media reports, Tariq had met his ailing mother in the hospital. Tariq’s return attracted a large crowd of party supporters and was considered an important development for the BNP ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Former PM of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia was born on 15 August 1945. She was the wife of Zia ur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh. She entered politics after the murder of her husband Zia ur Rehman. Took charge of BNP party. Corruption allegations were also made against Khaleda Zia. Also, in the year 2018, he had to go to jail. However, he was released due to health reasons. But, she remained under house arrest.

Khaleda Zia was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and returned to this post again from 2001 to 2006. She was the first woman Prime Minister of the country. She was the wife of former Bangladesh President and Army Chief Ziaur Rahman.

Khaleda Zia came to power through public vote in the 1991 national elections. During his tenure the parliamentary system was restored and free and fair elections were ensured. In 2007, when the army-backed caretaker government took power, Khaleda Zia was jailed along with many other political leaders, including Sheikh Hasina. Zia was later released and contested the 2008 parliamentary elections, but her party could not win. She is survived by her elder son Tariq, his wife and their daughter.
