Why is the Indian stock market closed today? Know the reasons and information about future holidays

Indian stock markets will remain closed for trading today i.e. on January 15. In view of the municipal elections in Maharashtra, BSE and NSE have amended their calendars, due to which the settlement holiday earlier marked has now become a full trading holiday. Bombay Stock Exchange has said that trading in equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts will remain suspended today. The exchange also clarified that equity derivative contracts expiring on January 15 will now expire on January 14 only. That is, the equity derivative contracts expired yesterday. National Stock Exchange has also issued a similar amendment and declared January 15 as a trading holiday for the Capital Market and Futures Options segment. This replaces the circular issued last week in which it was said that the market would remain open despite settlement restrictions.

Disruption in banking and clearing operations also became the reason

Exchanges have cited disruption in banking and clearing operations as the reason for this change. Settlement holidays are usually declared during elections or large public events, and since January 15 is a public holiday in Maharashtra, most banks will remain closed, making the normal settlement process not possible.
