I will not resign, my resolve to run the government is tied to my ‘public duty’: Starmer

London. There has been an earthquake again in British politics. PM Keir Starmer’s chair seems to be in danger. This threat started from Boris Johnson and continued till Rishi Sunak. But, it seems that now PM Starmer’s position is also in danger. Starmer’s troubles have increased since Mandelson’s name appeared in the Epstein file. Actually, PM Starmer had selected Mandelson for the appointment of Ambassador to America. Despite all the opposition and political pressure, Starmer has made it clear that he will not resign.
According to media reports, there is anger among people in Britain against Starmer. People and the opposition say that he recommended the appointment despite knowledge of Peter Mandelson’s closeness to notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer addressed his staff at 10 Downing Street on Monday. During this, he made his intentions clear against all political pressure. He said that his resolve to run the government is bound by ‘public duty’. He will continue the work of changing the country even amidst these controversies.
The biggest pressure on Starmer is regarding the appointment of Peter Mandelson. There was a storm in British politics after it came to light that Mandelson was linked to Jeffrey Epstein. Admitting this mistake, PM Starmer said that I am very clear that I deeply regret my decision to appoint Peter Mandelson. This was a wrong decision. I have apologized to the victims for this. This is absolutely the right step. Starmer said that what makes him most angry is that this controversy has weakened people’s faith. He told his staff that we have to prove that politics can change people’s lives. We will move forward from here and continue the work of transforming the country with confidence. Even though Starmer has refused to resign, the fallout from the controversy has fallen on his closest allies.
PM’s Chief of Staff McSweeney has resigned on Sunday. He was accused of supporting Mandelson despite his links to Epstein. Starmer said emotionally that Morgan and I have fought every political battle together in the last 8 years. His departure is a personal loss for me. PM’s communications director Tim Allen also resigned on Monday. Starmer is facing the anger of his own Labor Party MPs. Many MPs are saying in hushed tones that the PM should take moral responsibility and step down.
