Is pregnancy and childbirth safe in space?…..What does science say?

Washington. As humans are planning to establish settlements on Mars and Moon, a big question is standing in front of the scientists whether pregnancy and birth of a child in space is safe? Research so far has shown that this is technically possible, but without the Earth’s protective shield (gravity and atmosphere), the development of a new life would be no less than a major threat.
Earth’s gravity plays a primary role in strengthening the bones and muscles of our body. The microgravity of space can cause a drastic reduction in bone density of an embryo during development. Scientists believe that due to zero gravity, the upper body of the child can develop, but the muscles of the lower back and legs can become extremely weak.
The lack of gravity in space can cause body fluids to shift toward the head. This can increase the pressure inside the skull of the baby in the womb. This abnormal pressure can affect the child’s brain development and eyesight, putting them at risk of developing neurological problems in the future.
Not only this, space is full of dangerous cosmic radiation, from which the Earth’s atmosphere protects us. Fetal cells divide very rapidly, making them extremely sensitive to radiation. Radiation can damage DNA. Due to this, conditions like birth defects, miscarriage or premature birth can occur.
Not only this, giving birth to a child in space will be no less than a medical challenge. Without gravity, it would be nearly impossible for the mother and doctors to push during labor and control body fluids. Additionally, it will be a major physical challenge for a child who grows up in space to later adapt to Earth’s heavy gravity.
