AI company Anthropic clashes with Trump administration, case reaches court against Pentagon

AI company Anthropic on Monday filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon and other federal agencies. Anthropic has filed this lawsuit against the Trump administration’s decision, in which Anthropic has been classified as a ‘supply chain risk’.

Anthropic called the government’s action wrong

This case is an example of the ongoing tussle between the US Defense Department, the Pentagon, and the world’s leading AI companies. A company is placed in the supply chain risk category when it is suspected of having links to foreign adversaries. This could affect Anthropic Company’s business with the Pentagon. Anthropic alleges that classifying it in the supply chain category and the Trump administration directing the company to stop using the technology are legally wrong. The company has expressed strong displeasure with these steps of the government.

what is the controversy

According to media reports, the US Defense Department Pentagon wanted to use Anthropic Company’s AI model cloud for many government and military purposes, but the company made it clear that its AI technology should not be used for monitoring citizens. The company also does not want its AI technology to be used in weapons, with the help of which such weapons can be developed which do not even require humans to control them. The Pentagon became angry with these conditions and refused to accept them. After this, in February 2026, Anthropic was declared a supply chain threat by the US government. Which means that the US government now sees this company as a potential security threat.

What does it mean to be classified in the supply chain threat category?

Being classified as a supply chain threat means that government agencies and government contractors avoid using the technology of such companies. Due to this, the use of Anthropic’s technology in government projects may stop and the company’s business may suffer huge losses.

Anthropic CEO expressed concern

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has expressed concern over the US government’s decision. He says that it is necessary to make responsible rules regarding powerful technology like AI and if companies are punished in this way when they talk about ethics and security, then it will send a wrong message to the tech industry.
