Are carbon emissions being reduced due to the use of green steel? Know the claim of the report

By making it mandatory to use 26 percent green steel in government projects, emissions of 20.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide can be reduced by the year 2030. If the share of green steel becomes 37 percent, then 29.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions can be avoided. This is equivalent to taking approximately 9 million cars off the road every year. This information has come in the assessment report released on Thursday by the Confederation of Indian Industry i.e. CII and Climate Catalyst.

Executive Director of CII and Chairman of the Board of Global Ecolabeling Network K. S. Venkatagiri said that ‘Green Public Procurement can play an important role in moving India’s steel sector towards low carbon production. Sakshi Balani, Director of Climate Catalyst, said, a strong mandate on green steel can transform India’s steel sector at a faster pace than any subsidy or technology incentive. Only green public procurement can reduce carbon emissions and open up investment on a large scale.
