New Delhi: Petrol and diesel prices in India are stable for today, February 23, 2026. Fuel prices are updated every morning at 6 am by oil companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum. These rates change depending on other factors like global crude oil prices, strength of rupee against dollar, taxes of central and state governments and transport costs. The price is different in every city.
Why are prices so different in every city? Fuel does not come under GST like most things. Instead, it is subject to central excise duty and state VAT (value-added tax), which is determined separately by each state. Some states impose extra fees or keep taxes low to help people. Transport costs from refineries also play a role, with distant locations having to pay more.
