Mexico bows to Trump’s tariff threat, will give water to America

An important agreement has been signed between Mexico and America regarding water. Under this agreement, Mexico will now provide a fixed quantity of water to America every year, so that there is no uncertainty in the future. Let us tell you that earlier, US President Donald Trump had earlier warned that if Mexico did not provide more water on time, he could increase the tariff (import duty) on goods coming from Mexico by five percent. After this, talks were going on between the two countries for several months.

What is the new agreement between America and Mexico?

According to the new agreement, Mexico will supply at least 3.5 lakh acre-feet of water to the US every year in the current five-year cycle. One acre-foot of water means water up to 1 foot depth on 1 acre of land.

What was the problem with the old agreement?

Under the 1944 water treaty, Mexico had to give 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the US every five years. On an average, it also produces only 3.5 lakh acre-feet annually, but the US alleged that Mexico provides less water in the initial years, then makes up for it in the last years, causing loss to Texas farmers. The new agreement will eliminate this problem, because now it will be mandatory to provide minimum water every year.

What is Mexico’s concern?

Although America is calling this agreement a big victory, but this issue is sensitive in Mexico. There is a drought situation especially in the northern states. Farmers in the border state of Tamaulipas say many have not sown crops due to water shortages.
