Sholay’s record-breaking earnings, no competition in Indian cinema for 19 years

Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer superhit film ‘Sholay’ was released in theaters 50 years ago. Audience got special gift on the golden jubilee of ‘Sholay’

Today after 50 years, once again crowds of spectators have gathered in cinema halls to watch ‘Sholay’. This iconic film of Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan was released in theaters to give a special gift to the fans on the occasion of Golden Jubilee.

It has been re-released on the screen with the original climax of the film. But when ‘Sholay’ was released in theaters in 1975, it printed huge notes and for 19 years no other film could break this record.

Sholay’s budget and box office collection

‘Sholay’ was made under the direction of Ramesh Sippy at a cost of Rs 3 crore. After this, when this action packed film was released in 1975, it set records with its earnings at the box office. Made on a budget of just Rs 3 crore, this film earned Rs 15 crore and became the highest grossing Indian film. Even for 19 years, no Indian film could compete with the box office of ‘Sholay’.

Box office record of ‘Sholay’ broken after 19 years

‘Sholay’ has been doing well at the box office for a long time. The story of the film, the strong acting of the star cast and the cinematography were highly appreciated. For 19 years, a film could not be made which could beat the box office collection of ‘Sholay’. But in 1991, Sooraj Barjatya released his own film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’.

In this, the pairing of Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit was much talked about and it deposited Rs 72 crore in its account, leaving behind the box office collection of ‘Sholay’. Here too, along with the story and characters of the film, its album was also very much liked. This multi-starrer film was one of the hit films of that time.
