Strong condemnation of Iran’s missile and drone attacks, resolution passed

Geneva. The United Nations Security Council has passed an important resolution on Wednesday amid the ongoing fierce conflict and instability in the Middle East. The resolution, led by Bahrain, strongly condemned the recent missile and drone attacks by Iran on Gulf countries. It is noteworthy that these attacks targeting American assets and military bases located in Gulf countries were in response to the attacks on Iran that started on February 28, in which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was reportedly killed.
A total of 13 votes were cast in favor of this resolution in the Security Council, while two member countries did not participate in the voting. The special thing was that no member country voted against this proposal. India’s neighboring country Pakistan also supported this proposal and said that it itself is not untouched by the dangers of these attacks. At the same time, Russia and China remained absent from this voting process.
The passed resolution described the military actions taken by Iran against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan as a clear violation of international law. The Security Council stressed that these attacks pose a serious threat to global peace and security. The resolution demands that Iran immediately stop all its hostile activities against these countries. Also, the right of collective self-defense enjoyed by countries under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter is confirmed. The Council has strongly criticized the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, commercial vessels and civilians in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution warns that such attacks are having a devastating impact on the global economy, energy supplies and international trade. Furthermore, the Security Council commended the efforts of the GCC countries and other regional mediators that aim to achieve peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue. The United Nations Security Council, the most powerful peacekeeping body in the world, has reiterated its commitment to stability in the Middle East through this move. The 15-member council includes permanent members like the US, Russia, China, France and Britain as well as Pakistan, South Korea and other non-permanent members. The passing of this resolution is being considered a major diplomatic step towards increasing international pressure on Iran.
