Trump irritated by Modi-Putin’s friendship, may impose another tariff on India, hints at this

Washington. Recently, many countries of the world are keeping an eye on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India. America was keeping an eye on every step. Now President Donald Trump has indicated that another tariff may be imposed on India soon. According to reports, America can now increase the tariff on rice imported from India. It is also considering increasing the tariff on fertilizers imported from Canada. American producers have complained to Donald Trump about cheap foreign rice in the market. Let us tell you that America has imposed a tariff of 50 percent on India. Trade talks between the two countries are going to start once again this week. On December 10 and 11, the US delegation will meet with the Indian delegation and try to reach a bilateral trade agreement. India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal will be the chief negotiator from the Indian side.
Donald Trump has issued a $12 billion bailout package for American farmers. Speaking on this occasion, he said that the government will investigate how much cheap foreign rice is coming to the American market. Farmers tried to put pressure on Donald Trump to take strict steps. Farmers said that due to subsidy on foreign import of rice, domestic rice does not get the right price. On this, Trump said that they are cheating and there is a need to increase tariffs on them. Donald Trump also indicated that he is now going to increase tariffs on Canadian fertilizers. Merrill Kennedy, CEO of Louisiana’s Kennedy Rice Mill, told Trump that most of the rice is coming from India, Thailand and China. He said that tariffs have been imposed on these countries but there is a need to double the tariff on rice. We want more tariffs to be imposed on them. Donald Trump immediately instructed his Finance Minister Scott Besant to make a list of countries which are exporting more rice to America. Kennedy said the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are working, “but we need to increase them further.” Trump then looked at Besant and said, ‘India, tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do this? They will have to pay fees. Do they have discount on rice? To this Besant said, No sir, we are currently negotiating a trade deal with them.
Kennedy also told Trump that a case was going on against India in the World Trade Organization (WTO). This, he said, would be solved very quickly by imposing tariffs on countries that are sending goods illegally. Your problem will be solved in one day so we have to win the case in supreme court. According to statistics, India is the largest rice producing country in the world and holds 28 percent share in the global market. It is also the top exporter, accounting for 30.3 per cent of global exports in 2024-25. Among the rice varieties that India exports globally, Sona Masuri is preferred in markets like America and Australia.
