OpenAI signs agreement with Pentagon, employees start revolt

Washington. A new controversy has arisen in America regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Now AI is no longer just a matter of technology, but it is also becoming an important part of geopolitics and military strategy. Recently, the US Defense Department, Pentagon, has planned to use AI tools in its security and defense systems. But a heated debate has started between tech companies and their employees regarding this.

The controversy escalated when the US government told AI companies that their models could be used in military and national security purposes. AI company Anthropic, which makes AI models, has expressed objection to this proposal. The company said its AI should not be used for “mass surveillance” or fully automated weapons. Due to this, differences between Pentagon and Anthropic increased.
After Anthropic’s withdrawal, AI company Open AI reached an agreement with Pentagon. Under this deal, OpenAI’s AI models can be used in government and defense related systems. However, Open AI CEO Sam Altman said that many security conditions have been added to this agreement. According to him, AI will not be used for domestic surveillance or making completely autonomous weapons. Despite this, the decision further intensified the debate within the tech industry. Many employees fear that if military use of AI increases, it could be misused in the future. According to reports, hundreds of Google and Open AI employees wrote an open letter opposing the use of AI in surveillance and autonomous weapons. After this controversy, some people also started removing ChatGPT from their mobiles in protest. At the same time, some experts believe that if AI is used responsibly, then it can prove to be very helpful in national security, intelligence analysis and war strategy. In fact, the US defense program Project Maven is already using AI to analyze satellite and drone data, helping to identify potential targets. This is why military use of AI has now become a topic of global debate.
