NIS said it took the decision keeping “many circumstances” in mind. These also include prominent appearances by Kim Ju Ae at official events.
According to media reports, in recent months, Xu Ai was seen with her father in many big events. She also accompanied Kim Jong Un during his visit to Beijing in September. This was his first foreign tour, information about which came to light. The intelligence agency said it would keep an eye on whether Xu Ai attends a party conference this month. It is North Korea’s largest political event, which takes place once every five years. In this party conference, Pyongyang can give detailed information on its priorities for the next five years such as foreign policy, war preparations and nuclear program.
According to the report, South Korean lawmaker Lee Song-kwan said on Thursday that the NIS had previously told Ju Ae she was “training to become a successor.” The agency now believes it has reached the stage of “formally declaring a successor”. Lee said that Kim Joo Ae has appeared with her father in many big events. She attended the Korean People’s Army Foundation Day event and also visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. There are also indications of his opinion emerging on some government policies. Considering all these things, NIS believes that he has now been named as his successor.
Kim Ju Ae’s visit to China has raised questions about whether Kim is grooming his daughter as a future successor. Experts believed that taking Xu to China was a sign of his rising status.
